In today’s economy it is essential that you try and save everywhere that you can. Many people start with the cable bill or cell phones because that is typically where they can save the most on a month to month basis. Probably close behind those two are savings in your grocery bill, which can be a little more difficult to harness. The reason this is more difficult is because food is a necessity, as are most household cleaners. However, with a little more time and knowledge, you can save a substantial amount of money on things such as laundry detergent, floor cleaners and all purpose cleaners. Not only will you save money by going green, but you will get all natural products, which will help with the environment as well. When someone proposed the idea of making my own laundry detergent, I was very skeptical to say the least. However, the thought of not having to buy laundry detergent was appealing, as that stuff is expensive! With a few ingredients that can found at many supermarkets or hardware stores, we have a batch of laundry detergent that will last us about 6 months. The total cost of this? Well, I would say under $15. In the end, our clothes get just as clean, if not cleaner using homemade laundry detergent.Another idea to save money by going green is look into rechargeable batteries. Your initial investment will be higher than just buying standard batteries, but if you are anything like us, you go through batteries at a very fast clip! For about $35 you can buy a name brand battery charger with 4 “AA” batteries. Once you’ve got the charger, then you can buy additional batteries for about $11 dollars (more depending on the brand). This eco-friendly product can be a huge boon to the environment as well! The final idea on how to save money by going green is something that most people will probably consider a little far fetched, but really it isn’t. By building and installing solar panels at your home you can generate electricity to complement your current gird supplied power or for a backup. It’s really not as radical of an idea as you may think, especially considering the wealth of information available. In most cases, you can build a single solar panel for your home in 2 days, for as little as $100. Now, this single solar panel won’t generate power for your entire home, but if you added on to the system, you can generate enough power to lower your electricity bill by quite a bit.Now that wasn’t that hard, was it? These are just 3 simple things that you can do to save money by going green. In an economy where every dollar matters to most people, it’s time to look into creative ways to save money, and if you can help out the environment in the process, then that’s even better!
